My Musical Instruments file is filled with literally hundreds of uncommon entries for instruments whose existence is unknown to most people.  One of the more ancient examples is today\’s Watchword of the Day:

hydraulus n. ancient Greek and Roman pipe organ which used water pressure to force air through the pipes.
